United Women Firefighters records, 1977-2005.

The United Women Firefighters Records document three general areas: Brenda Berkman's person history as she strove to become a firefighter, the Berkman v. City of New York litigation, and the founding and development of the United Women Firefighers (UWF). This collection documents women's efforts, especially Brenda Berkman's, to become New York City Fire Department firefighters and the difficulties they encountered on the job. Seen in a broader context, the collection reflects women's entry into traditionally male occupations in the 1970s and 1980s. The collection also involves the formation of a women's organization which has supported women's efforts to combat sex discrimination in a way that the traditional labor union, the Uniformed Firefighters' Association, has not. The United Women Firefighters' papers provide much evidence of the function of the United Women Firefighters as a pressure and support group. Issues such as probation, harassment and physical fitness are discussed in newsletters and correspondence. Also represented are materials documenting communication with women firefighters, women's organizations, and representatives of fire departments in other cities.
